About the interconnector

Two STERPMU-Rp devices were delivered to IPTO and installed in Chania substation (Crete) and Sklavouna substation (Peloponnese) remote monitoring of test electrification of the submarine cable that connects Crete with the Greek mainland system.

The Crete-Peloponnese interconnection called the ‘interconnection of records’ is the longest AC cable in the world (174 km) and the longest submarine high voltage cable connection with three-pole cable of XLPE insulation technology in the world (132 km), according to IPTO. Double link system (150 kV AC, 2 x 200 MVA) will meet one-third of Crete’s electricity needs.

STERPMU - Rp devices were delivered to IPTO and installed at substations in extremely short time. It took only six days from the first inquiry from IPTO to fully operational wireless monitoring supported by synchrophasor and continuous waveform recording technology.

A successful 24 h test energization of the interconnector was successfully executed on December 22 and 23, 2020.

After a two-week evaluation period was completed, STERPMU-Rp devices were selected for permanent monitoring of Crete-Peloponnese interconnector.
